With HBO’s critically acclaimed a knight of the seven kingdoms In preparation for its season finale on Sunday, now is the time to check in on that other game of Thrones Spinoff: Too Dark dragon houseWhich now has a suitably ominous teaser for the upcoming third season.
(Spoilers for the first two seasons below.)
It takes place approximately 200 years before the events of the series. game of Thrones, Chronicles the beginning of when dragons were still a part of Westeros, and the end of the reign of House Targaryen. Primary source material is fire and bloodA fictional history of the Targaryen kings, written by George RR Martin. As book readers know, those events culminated in civil war and the extinction of dragons – at least until Daenerys Targaryen arrived.
The first season spanned several years and included some significant time jumps, which required the replacement of younger actors as their characters aged. For those who may need a refresher: King Viserys (Paddy Considine) has died, and his second wife, Alicent (Olivia Cooke), conspires with her father, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), to make her eldest son, Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), king instead of Viserys’ declared heir, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy).
Even though she was technically the rightful heir, Rhaenyra was actually considering House Hightower’s terms for a concession — until the arrogant Prince Aemond (Evan Mitchell), Alicent’s younger son, went after Rhaenyra’s younger son, Luceris (Elliot Grihalt). Both dragonriders failed to control their dragons, and Aemon’s much larger dragon, Vhagar, swallowed poor Lucerys and his smaller dragon, Arax, out of the air. The season concluded with Rhaenyra and her husband/uncle Damon (Matt Smith) receiving devastating news, effectively destroying any hopes of a peaceful resolution.
dragon house has always taken a leisurely, more focused approach to its characters’ political machinations, including bloody violence every now and then, and S2 was no exception. But it started with a bang: the infamous “blood and cheese” incident (well known to book readers), in which assassins sent to take out Aemond as retribution for Lucretias could not find him and butcher Aegon’s eldest son. We lost a few more dragons and several supporting characters in the ensuing chaos, and Aegon was so seriously injured that Aemond became regent – with no plans to give up the Iron Throne anytime soon.
