Instagram mandates total return to office for employees in 2026

Instagram employees will be back at their desks full time next year. Starting February 2, employees with social media networks will be expected to work in-person in offices five days a week. Instagram leader Adam Mosseri announced the change in an internal memo first reported by Alex Heath sources say Newsletter. “It’s clear we have to evolve,” he told employees, concluding with the comment that “2026 is going to be tough.”

The full return to office order applies to Instagram’s US employees in offices with fixed desks. The memo allowed that people would still be able to work remotely “if needed,” but gave an open call to “use your best judgment” about when to take advantage of that flexibility.

Many tech companies have adopted a hybrid approach to office work in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, Meta created a policy to spend three days a week in the office in 2023. Although messages from executives emphasize that there are significant benefits to working in person, employees have often resisted going back to the old ways.

Mosseri outlined other planned changes aimed at making the social media company “more agile and creative.” One change that is perhaps more welcome than a return to the office is reducing recurring meetings. Any recurring meetings every six months will be canceled unless they are deemed “absolutely necessary”. He also plans more prototyping and a faster process of unblocking and decision-making product observations instead of decks in the team.
