“I thought my only option was to teach sex ed in elementary and middle schools through donations,” said Amari, a sex-positive virtual assistant and social media manager. “And now suddenly I have these two businesses where I’m working in the sex field in a completely different capacity than I thought.”

“Sexual health nurses, gynecologists, obstetricians, all the way up to sex workers,” she described clients. That’s not all: “Only fan models, sex toy companies, sex dungeons, game parties…reproductive justice charities, abortion charities. The list…it’s crazy.”

Mashable interviewed Amari about how she went from being a university student to the right-hand person of the sex-positive Among Us.

“This accidentally became my full-time job.”

While studying sociology at university, Amari said, “Every subject I was allowed to choose was about sex in some shape or form.” Topics included gender, sexuality, sex work, porn, feminism, and sexual violence.

She volunteered for various charities, such as a charity for sex workers’ rights and a charity about sexual domestic violence. She will help with various administrative tasks, social media work and events. Eventually, she got a job at a nursery and thought that when she graduated, she would go either the charity or women’s rights group route or the childcare route.

Then Covid hit. But because nurseries remained open in the UK, she graduated with a full-time job. Amari loved working with children, so she decided to enroll in teacher training.

However, unfortunately, it was a horrific experience. Between working 80-hour work weeks and not getting paid due to the nature of the program, “I became incredibly stressed mentally, physically,” she told Mashable. “It attacked my joints. I was on crutches by the time I was about 23.”

“I was actually physically unable to work with children,” she said. “My body completely shut down.”

His experience with his teacher was also not good. All of this led her to ask herself what she was going to do with her life.

Given her charity volunteering while at university, she sent her CV to the charity and secured an administrative and social media role at a forest school nursery. While the pay was low, the job was remote, and Amari decided, “This is the life I want to live.”

Around this time she also gained her sex education qualification, but realized that she was not able to cope in a school environment due to her physical condition.

Months later, a reproductive justice organization reached out to her and offered administrative work for 10 hours per month. Amari felt she could take on administration and use the extra pocket money, so she registered as self-employed.

“That’s how I founded the agency,” he said.

She reached out to other charities to offer freelancer work and this gradually became her full-time job.

“It became my full-time job quite by accident,” he said. “And all of a sudden I was like, ‘Oh my God’… a sex educator contacted me, a sex worker contacted me. I had a sex work company,” she said after finding it through Instagram.

“I didn’t even know that all these people needed this kind of support,” he said. But now, she works with six clients and has a team of more than a dozen people who handle administrative and social media work.

Amari’s day-to-day is “cool” these days, he said. Sometimes she makes discovery calls with potential clients, negotiates brand deals, does interviews or podcasts, or writes articles, but she said that’s more of a “side thing.”

“I wake up whenever I want,” she said. “I can go to the gym whenever I want. I can do Pilates whenever I want…Honestly, I’m mainly in bed tapping away at my computer.”

This doesn’t mean she always has her feet up. As a woman who posts about sex on social media, she knows all about the platform’s harsh rules. “The first time I got banned, I thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to lose my job. My whole business is going to be ruined. I need to get a new job.’ “I was so stressed and overwhelmed,” Amari said. But she did a lot of research and talked to customers who have experienced shadowbanning, so she’s gathered this knowledge over the years.

“We understand shadow banning, we understand censorship,” he said. “But I can’t promise you that nothing will happen to your account.” However, she has best practices: diversify your platforms (have two to three social media accounts), and also go outside of social media with an email marketing list and website.
