If Chiefs get new OC, Patrick Mahomes wants him to “bring new ideas every single day”

Nothing seemed right about the Chiefs’ 2025 season, especially after quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in December.

But with the club missing the postseason for the first time since 2014 — let alone the first time in the Mahomes era — Kansas City will have a chance to reset in a few different ways this offseason.

It appears that one of those factors is likely to be the team’s offensive coordinator. Matt Nagy, who has held the role since 2023, has been a popular choice on the head coach interview circuit this cycle. But even if Nagy doesn’t get the top job, he’s reportedly considering becoming a play-calling offensive coordinator for another team.

Additionally, the Chiefs could bring back current Bears running backs coach Eric Bieniemy or someone else to inject something new on offense for the club.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Mahomes said he hopes Nagy gets another chance to be a head coach because he has done a lot of great things to help him in his career. But there are some attributes he’d like in Kansas City’s next OC.

“Obviously, there are names out there, but how many vacancies there are at the head coaching position, you’ve got to see how you build the staff,” Mahomes said. “I know Coach Reid – if the ‘Negs get another head coaching job, he’ll have a good plan on who he wants to bring in.

Mahomes added, “But for me, I just want somebody who loves football, who cares about football, wants to give his all to win, wants to hold guys accountable and then brings new ideas every day.” “It’s something that we have to continue to do if you want to continue to be great in this league, you have to keep evolving and getting better and better and that’s something that we’ll try to do here and I want to bring back that winning culture of being accountable to each other and going out there and playing great football every single day, practice or game.”

That’s because Mahomes — who has also mentioned he’s aiming for a Week 1 return to the game — will have some insight into who the next offensive coordinator could be. With several offensive assistants leaving the franchise for one reason or another this offseason, we’ll see how Kansas City’s staff turns out and how it impacts the club’s offense in 2026.
