  • Spoiler warning: This article names the secret traitor and contains details of the new series The Traitors.

The identity of the “secret traitor” is revealed in the latest episode of The Traitors, with Fiona joining Stephen and Rachel in the castle’s turret.

The secret traitor wearing the red cloak has clearly been in the works since he was picked out by presenter Claudia Winkleman in an early episode of the BBC One series.

He was given certain powers, such as drawing up a shortlist of players, allowing the other three traitors to be assassinated, and was exposed after banishing the first traitor last week, when Hugo was voted into the Round Table.

Psychologist Ellie also revealed on Wednesday’s episode that she was Ross’s girlfriend, as he became the third player to be exiled.

Ellie has yet to reveal the relationship to her fellow contestants and told the camera: “Now what I have to do is avenge his death.”

During his exit interview, sales assistant Ross admitted that he thought his girlfriend was a traitor.

“Ellie was my safe place in sports,” he said. “However, I thought she was a traitor because she would not talk to me whenever we spent a few moments together.”

The secret traitor was revealed at the beginning of the episode when Fiona lifted the hood of her red cloak before turning to Stephen and Rachel and saying: “I was wonderful, wasn’t I?”

Fiona’s co-conspirators agreed that she had done an “amazing” job at deceiving the other players as she revealed her identity in the turret.

“Hollywood is beckoning. I can feel it,” she said.

For the first time since the show’s launch in 2022, viewers were kept in the dark about the identity of a secret fourth traitor or a newly introduced twist as part of the series.

Anonymity allowed the audience at home to play along for the first time, to see if they would outperform the loyalists in identifying the traitor.

In a series of flashbacks to the previous week’s episode, Winkleman was seen appointing Fiona, with the contestant responding: “I’ll do my best to be as treacherous as possible”, adding that she was “drunk with power”.

The identity of the secret traitor was revealed on Wednesday night

The 62-year-old local government official was overjoyed to finally meet her fellow traitors in episode four.

He said, “If the devil had cast his net, he would not have been able to choose better than three.”

But it may be difficult for the new traitor to connect with both of them, making his position even more vulnerable.

Rachel has already admitted she’s “nervous” that Fiona might “ruffle some feathers” – especially after she voted out traitor Hugo in Friday’s episode.

“He has to go. I’ve basically done your work for you these past few nights,” Fiona told a shocked Rachel.

At the end of Friday’s episode, the traitors were given the opportunity to expose the secret traitor by completing a secret task.

Rachel and Stephen had to put blood-colored fingerprints on the faces of nine contestants on a group portrait, thereby shortlisting them for murder, without their fellow players knowing.

After Rachel successfully completed the task, it was confirmed that the identity of the secret traitor would be revealed in the next episode.

Before undress on Wednesday, Stephen and Rachel made a pact that they would not write each other’s names on the round table during future deportations.

Former traitor Hugo was unhappy with the secret traitor turn, joking: “I don’t need middle management”.

After it was teased on Friday that the secret traitor would be exposed in the next episode, some fans expressed surprise that his identity was being revealed so early in the series.

Producers had not previously confirmed how long the secret traitor would remain unknown.

However, some viewers have speculated on social media that Hugo’s sudden banishment may have caused the secret traitor’s identity to be revealed earlier than expected.

The existence of a secret traitor did not sit well with the three other traitors, with Hugo memorably commenting that he “doesn’t need middle management”.

As the only player who knew the true position of every other contestant, the secret traitor changed the dynamics of the game and left the other traitors with less control.

According to overnight figures, the launch episode The Traitors was watched by an average of 6.4 million viewers on New Year’s Day, while the following two episodes were watched by 5.8 million viewers each.

However, when adding in the viewers who are tuned into services like iPlayer, these figures are almost certain to increase.

A celebrity spin-off featuring Alan Carr and Sir Stephen Fry was a huge success last autumn, attracting more than 15 million viewers.
