I Love That Holly Hunter Can’t Sit in a Chair Normally on ‘Starfleet Academy’

The first two episodes of Starfleet Academy go to great lengths to do so, to the point of open defiance of academic authority as an endorsement of expectations that have been in place for almost 60 years star trekLet us tell you that this is a show with a very different vibe from the earlier shows. Its young adult protagonists are a heady mix of hormonal emotions and sad distrust of their elders that, in equal parts, feels like an accurately charming representation of a group of kids who have grown up in a wildly shaken universe and also love a show that’s been running for nearly as long. star trek Fans are angry that these young people are not acting like people star trek should behave.

But it’s not one of those kids who actually makes the most attractive move, or the one that probably has the fewest corners. star trek Fans are gnashing their teeth over the alleged disrespect. Instead, it’s arguably the most experienced member of the cast, Holly Hunter, and I completely agree that this move is incredibly charming above anything else.

Hunter played the role of Nahla Ake, Starfleet AcademyStand-in for the head of the group of young cadets and senior staff, dual Chancellor of the Academy as a learning institution, as well as Captain in command of the Starfleet vessel on which the Academy is based, the USS athena. A half-lanthanite, AK has survived for centuries, meaning in the show’s 32nd century setting (during the events of the previous half). Star Trek: Discovery), she has seen some of the best and the very worst the Federation has to offer – and has been part of the latter, something that the series explores early on as it takes us back to the moment when AK obeys judicial orders which causes him to become disillusioned with, and ultimately, leave, Starfleet.

When the show moves forward 15 years later and AK is approached with the opportunity to rejoin Starfleet and lead the efforts to re-establish the Academy, she meanwhile becomes more calm. She’s hanging out on Bajor, relaxing and taking care of young children, and just because she puts the Starfleet uniform back on doesn’t mean the atmosphere immediately stops. Hunter is the most charming of a bunch of extremely attractive stars, playing AK with a playful playfulness that makes her feel less like a conventional star trek Kind of like the captain and your cool aunt, but still reminiscent of the kind of light streak we could see in previous captains (she’s especially realized in her interactions with Captain Janeway, especially in sailorIn the early seasons, she had to grapple with the idea that the traditional captain-subordinate relationship expected of Starfleet could not continue on a ship stranded 70,000 light-years away from headquarters).

But it also comes down to AK’s physicality. the minute athena Landing at her primary home of San Francisco, she takes off her Starfleet-issue shoes and walks around barefoot, daring almost everyone to call her out. You can see him wearing loose-fitting, loose-fitting clothes and thick glasses, just like you see in his red command tunic. And it is also by the way that he has not seen any chair on which he could not climb and curl up like a house cat.

Hunter plays AK as the tiniest woman in the Alpha Quadrant (the actress is 5’2″ and is comically dwarfed by a good group of students, a fact brought out in several scenes where she shares close-ups with someone else’s torso). his private office athena It’s packed with chairs, sofas, and armchairs, and in the first two episodes – as well as the remaining six episodes shown to press so far – we see her draped or practically draped over them at times. In a spectacular scene at the beginning of the premiere episode her superiors silently approve as AK repeatedly adjusts the comfort settings of the captain’s chair. athenaThe bridge is at its lowest height, all he needs to do is immediately bring his feet up and casually prop himself on an armrest. Later, we see her lying almost in the same position, bundled up and reading a book.

It lends AK this disarmingly anarchic energy, which, on the one hand, feels like an evolution of everyone screwing up, when Jonathan Frakes would have the scenario reversed and he’d duck behind chairs to take his seat. tngAnd on the other hand, it almost feels like it’s poking fun at what we’ve come to expect from typical Starfleet decor. It’s an immediate visual indicator of where AK is at this point in her life: she was once a stern, rule-abiding Starfleet officer, and thus has been driven to prop up the bones of a status quo that has long been broken. Now, she doesn’t really care about screwing up the rules or what other people think of her – she’s just here to be comfortable, to show this new generation of students that they can be comfortable with her, and get along with them on a more acceptable level.

Everyone star trek The Captain has a quirk, and the drink of choice has already been chosen. It’s fun to have a person whose personality is built around finding new and inventive ways to hang himself from his furniture.
