HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Police Department said an officer and his canine partner are recovering after their police cruiser was overturned in a crash downtown Friday night.

According to HPD, officers and a K9 were on their way to assist in a pursuit when the police cruiser collided with a black Jeep on Smith Street at Pease Street around midnight. Police said the jeep had a red light, which led to the accident. According to officials, the officer’s vehicle overturned and rolled forward about a block.

Police said the officer had activated his lights and siren when the crash occurred.

The driver of the jeep showed no signs of injury, officials said. Police said the driver was believed to be taken to hospital, but added that they did not believe anyone was seriously injured.

According to officials, both the HPD officer and the police dog were taken to the hospital for their injuries and are expected to recover. Police said the driver of the jeep was also believed to have been taken to hospital, but added that no one was seriously injured.
