MILWAUKEE/SULLIVAN A winter storm warning has been issued for all of southern Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, through Saturday, Nov. 29, according to the National Weather Service office.

NWS meteorologist Kevin Wagner told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the storm is expected to be a “long-duration snowfall,” bringing 10 to 14 inches of snowfall.

“This is one of these systems that will produce widespread snowfall and cause some widespread impacts,” Wagner said.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Milwaukee from 6 a.m. Saturday, November 29 until 6 a.m. Sunday, November 30. Wagner said warmer temperatures at the lake could impact snowfall totals, leading to “lesser amounts along the lakeshore.”

“But if you get a little bit inland, even the western part of Milwaukee County into Waukesha, we can see that volume actually go toward the upper end of our range,” he said.

This weekend’s storm comes just days after Wisconsin’s first major storm of 2025, which blanketed parts of far-northwestern Wisconsin with more than two feet of snow.

Wagner said those traveling for Thanksgiving should keep an eye on the forecast.

“If you can change plans to avoid worst-case scenarios, that would probably be the best idea,” he said.

“This is traditionally one of our higher producer programs (and) we really haven’t seen one of these here in a while,” Wagner said. “So be careful.”

what to do in a winter storm

During winter storms, the NWS recommends staying indoors, stocking up on food and water, and charging essential devices in case of power outages. If your heat goes out, the NWS says you should:

  • Close unnecessary rooms.
  • Place towels or clothes in cracks under doors.
  • Close blinds or curtains.
  • Eat and drink to provide energy to your body.
  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, light and warm clothing.

If you are without shelter, you can visit the 211 Wisconsin website or call 211 to locate the nearest warming services.

The NWS also recommends not driving during the storm, as conditions can create hazardous driving conditions. For live updates on road conditions and accidents in Wisconsin, you can check out the 511 Wisconsin map.
