High country murderer Greg Lynn breached DV order and escaped police custody before first wife’s death | Victoria

Convicted High Country killer Greg Lynn once escaped from police custody and was subject to intervention orders obtained by his former partner before his death in 1999, it can now be revealed.

The suppression order, first granted in January 2023, expired on Wednesday as the media struggled to overturn it in the wake of the conviction of a former Jetstar pilot for the murder of 73-year-old Carol Clay at a remote Victorian campsite in March 2020.

The order had previously prevented the media from reporting on Lynn’s criminal history, including any interactions with police in relation to his first wife, Lisa, who was found dead outside their home in Melbourne’s north.

A coroner determined that Lisa Lynn died after consuming an overdose of drugs and alcohol, and no one was charged in connection with her death.

On two occasions, Greg Lynn breached the intervention order that Lisa Lynn had obtained by attending her Mount Macedon home and then having heated phone calls with her.

She complained to the police and Lynn was asked to return a personal organizer she had taken from the family home. The officers took him to where he said it was located, but instead of returning it to the police, he simply continued walking towards the railway station.

Lynn was later charged with two counts of breaching an intervention order and fleeing police.

He pleaded guilty to the offense in the Magistrates Court in May 1999, and was given a bond of good behavior without conviction.

During a pre-trial hearing in May 2024, prosecutors told the court that they wanted Lisa Lynn’s parents to give evidence about their relationship before her death.

When the mother was trying to get Lynn released she made a statement about traveling from Tasmania to Victoria to meet her daughter.

“As far as I’m concerned, Greg is responsible for my daughter’s death because of the mental torture he caused her, leaving her living in fear of him,” the court was told.

“Lisa had documented multiple instances of abuse.”

Crown prosecutor Daniel Porcedu alleged that Lisa Lynn suffered persistent physical and mental abuse at the hands of the former pilot.

He told the court that Lynn “went into an uncontrollable rage while out for dinner in Macedon”, targeting a man at the venue and then venting his anger on his wife.

Lynn’s barrister, Dermot Dan Casey, said it was all “hearsay” and argued that none of this material should be allowed to be broadcast to the jury.

The jury at Lynn’s trial was not told about his prior interactions with police.

He has always denied murdering Clay and another camper, 74-year-old Russell Hill in 2020, claiming their deaths were an accident.

In June 2024, a jury convicted him of Clay’s murder, but acquitted him of Hill’s death.

He is fighting his conviction and 32-year jail sentence in the Victorian Court of Appeal, a verdict on which has yet to be handed down.
