The Aeron is the world’s most iconic office chair, found in offices around the world for good reason. It’s all-mesh design is excellent for airflow, and you’ll get every possible adjustment to make this chair support your body. (Read more about my experience here.) You’ll have several options when shopping, all of which affect the price, so let’s learn about them:

  • frame: This is where you can choose the color for your Aeron’s frame and base. Graphite is the cheapest, but you can upgrade it to a polished aluminum base, for example.
  • size: The Aeron comes in three sizes: A, B, and C. I recommend using Herman Miller’s size guide (tap the ? icon on the product page) to purchase the version that best fits your body. For example, the company recommends people between 5’2″ and 6′ tall choose size B.
  • Back Support: Lumbar support can go a long way in keeping your back pain-free after sitting on a chair for a long time. I recommend you choose the Adjustable Lumbar Support or the Adjustable Posture Fit SL; The latter is more supportive, also targeting the sacral region of the spine.
  • Leaning: Upgrade to a Tilt Limiter! It lets you limit the bending range between three angles (straight, mid-tilt, and full-tilt). It can also tilt the seat forward for a more active and engaged seating position. If you choose the Basic Tilt option, you’ll need to turn the tension knob to adjust the effort required to tilt the chair.
  • Weapon: You have three options: fixed, height-adjusted, and fully adjustable. Fixed means the arms are set at a fixed height, while height-adjustable lets you raise or lower them. Fully adjustable arms let you slide the arms backward and forward, and tilt them in and out.
  • Armpad: Your choice if you want polyurethane foam pad or leather.
  • Caster: This depends on whether your desk has a carpet or not.

Herman Miller says there is free shipping on all orders over $1,500. Just remember that the 30 percent off special sale price for Aaron’s ends November 26.

While Aaron may be more familiar to many, my personal favorite is Herman Miller Embody. Its flat and narrow seat may take a week or two to get used to, but after testing other office chairs I find it to be something of a palate cleanser. It feels just right, with an excellent back support system and adjustable seat depth, which surprisingly works for my 6’4″ frame. For the Embody you have very little to choose from, but the hardest choice is whether to go with Sink or Medley upholstery. Sink is soft and thick, while Medley feels a little more textured, thicker and stiffer.

These are just two of Herman Miller’s office chairs, but there are many other options, including gaming versions of the Embody and Aeron, not to mention desks, lighting, and other furniture. Maybe now is the time to finally consider springing for classic Eames?
