Apple today picked up an interesting new member to its design team, Sebastian de With, co-founder of iPhone camera app Halide. “So excited to be working with the best team in the world on products we love,” he said in announcing the move on Threads today.
The Halide app has caught our attention at Engadget at several points over the past few years. Dee is also the co-founder of With Lux, the parent company of Halide. Other Lux apps also have an emphasis on photography and videography, especially on Apple devices. Prior to Halide, De With did other work at Apple, collaborating on properties including iCloud, MobileMe, and Find My apps. It’s unclear whether his exit will mean any notable changes for Halide, or Lux apps Kino, Specter and Orion.
For a long time, Apple’s design philosophy was expressed by Jony Ive, who left the company in 2022. Since his departure, no one person has emerged as the face and voice of Apple’s approach to design, which is why recent moves like liquid glass have faced deeply divided reactions.
