A group of military officers say they have taken control of Guinea-Bissau, amid reports that President Oumareau Sissoko Embalo has been arrested.
Shortly after gunshots were heard in the capital, Bissau, government sources told the BBC that Emballo had been detained.
The report comes three days after the presidential election in which the main opposition candidate was disqualified.
The results were expected on Thursday – Embalho and his nearest rival Fernando Dias have both claimed victory.
Witnesses in Bissau reported hearing gunshots at around 13:00 GMT on Friday, but it was not immediately clear who was involved in the shooting or whether there were any casualties.
According to news agency AFP report, hundreds of people on foot and in vehicles fled in search of shelter as soon as they heard the gunshots.
Guinea-Bissau, with a population of just under two million people, is one of the poorest countries in the world. The former Portuguese colony has seen nine coups or attempted coups since 1980.
There have been two attempts to overthrow Embalo, with the latest attempt occurring in December 2023.
