Grok is spreading misinformation about the Bondi Beach shooting

Grok has the best track record. But despite the very low standards of the XAI, its failure following the tragic mass shooting at Bondi Beach in Australia is shocking. The AI chatbot has repeatedly misidentified 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmed, the man who heroically disarmed a shooter, and claimed that the verified video of his actions was something else entirely – including that it was an old viral video of a man climbing a tree.

Following the attack, Ahmed was widely praised for his heroism, but some tried to dismiss or even deny his actions. Someone also immediately started a fake news site, which appeared to be AI-generated, in which an article named a fictitious IT professional, Edward Crabtree, as the person who disarmed the attacker. Of course, it was picked up by Grok and rebroadcast on X.

But Grok also suggested that Ahmed’s photographs were of an Israeli held hostage by Hamas. And it was claimed that the video taken at the scene was actually of Currumbin Beach, Australia during Cyclone Alfred.

Broadly speaking, it seems that Grok is having trouble understanding the questions today and giving appropriate answers. It answered a question about Oracle’s financial difficulties with a summary of the shooting at Bondi Beach. When asked about the validity of a story about a UK police operation, he first cited today’s date, then the poll numbers for Kamala Harris.
