We all know that Gordon Ramsay is well acquainted with the world of luxury. He operates Michelin-starred restaurants and boasts a huge rare car collection – and the same is true of his super rare watch collection. It brings together some of the most sought-after brands in the world – think Rolex, IWC, Breitling, Omega and Audemars Piguet.
But she’s outdone herself with her most recent Instagram post — and we’re not talking about the giant truffle she’s holding in her hand. On a tour of his restaurant in Las Vegas, the chef is wearing a very special Patek Philippe: The Perpetual Calendar Retrograde Ref 6159G With a smoked sapphire dial and white gold case with a retail price of just over £100,000.
This is an interesting watch for many reasons. First of all, it is one of the very few Patek Philippe models with a translucent smoked sapphire dial that teases the caliber 26-330 S QR movement working underneath. Where these may sometimes sit a little lower on the legibility scale, like A. Lange & Söhne’s lumen dial, it has a black-gradient rim so it’s also easy to read – which is always a plus.
In addition to telling the time, it also has a perpetual calendar with a retrograde date hand – a complex complication that tracks the date, day, month and leap year, with a date hand that returns to ‘1’ at the end of each month rather than cycling through the remaining dates, which does not need to be shown – as well as an accurate moon phase indicator, which you can see in action below the dial.
Then there are all the finer details. The case is made of 18 ct white gold (like the hands and the patent triple-blade fold-over clasp) and features Patek Philippe’s signature hobnail guilloché pattern on the bezel and case back, which is transparent so you can see the movement from below. Even for Gordon, this is going to be tough to beat.
