Google isn’t just blowing smoke – the new image generator is much better. Its grasp of the nuances of the world and language is evident, resulting in more realistic results. Even before this, AI images were getting so good that they could be difficult to recognize at a glance. Gone are the days when you could just count fingers to identify AI. However, Google is trying to help identify AI content.

Images created with Nano Banana Pro will continue to have embedded SynthID watermarks that Google’s tools can detect. The company is also adding more C2PA metadata to further label AI images. Gemini app is also part of this effort. From now on, you can upload an image and ask something like “Is this AI?” The app will not detect any old AI image, but by checking the SynthID it will tell you whether it is a product of Google AI or not.

Gemini can now detect images with its own AI.

Plus, Google is making it a little harder for flesh-and-blood humans to know whether an image was created by AI. Working with the knowledge that professionals want to create images with Nano Banana Pro, Google has removed visible watermarks from images for AI Ultra customers. These images still have SynthID, but only have the Gemini twinkle in the bottom corner.

While everyone can use the new Nano Banana Pro today, AI Ultra customers will enjoy the highest usage limits. Gemini Pro users will get slightly less access, and free users will get the lowest limit before being booted into the non-Pro version.
