The command line is hot again. For some people, command lines were never there No Sure, hot, but it’s becoming more and more common in the age of AI. Google launched the Gemini command-line tool last year, and now it has a new AI-focused command-line option for its cloud products. The new Google Workspace CLI bundles the company’s existing cloud APIs into one package that makes it easy to integrate with various AI tools, including OpenGL. How do you know that this setup won’t be lost and all your data won’t be lost? That’s the fun part – not you.
There are some important caveats with the Workspace tool. Although this new GitHub project is from Google, it is “not an officially supported Google product.” So you are free to use it if you choose. The company notes that as the Google Workspace CLI continues to evolve, functionality may change dramatically, and this could break the workflows you’ve built in the meantime.
For those interested in tinkering with AI automation and don’t mind the inherent risks, the Google Workspace CLI has a lot to offer, even at this early stage. It includes APIs for every Workspace product, including Gmail, Drive, and Calendar. It is designed for use by humans and AI agents, but like everything Google does now, there is a clear emphasis on AI.
Google Cloud director Addy Osmani says the tool supports structured JSON output, and includes more than 40 agent skills. The Workspace CLI focuses on agentic systems that can make command-line inputs and directly parse JSON output. Integrated tools can load and create Drive files, send emails, create and edit calendar appointments, send chat messages and more.
