OpenAI may be stepping back from video creation, but Google is moving forward with a major AI update to its Vids editing product. The company’s latest video and audio models are now integrated with the tool, and you can choose from a variety of controllable avatars to appear in the generated video. It’s now even easier to share your creations on YouTube.
Veo 3.1 is the biggest part of Vids upgrade. Google first deployed this updated model in Gemini late last year, which promises substantial improvements in realism and stability. While Google has introduced Veo as a tool for filmmakers, it doesn’t position Vids as such. Google suggests using the AI tools in Vids to create animated party flyers, business sizzle reels, or video greeting cards. You can use Vids for free, but without an AI subscription you won’t be able to create very many videos.

If you’re not paying for any AI access on your account, you only get 10 video generations per month. AI Pro subscribers can get 50 videos, and those who pay for Google’s pricier AI Ultra plan (personal or enterprise) get 1,000 videos per month. Like most other Veo implementations, the videos are eight seconds long and 720p resolution.
Google’s recently unveiled Lyria music creation model is also now part of Vids. You don’t even need to type the lyrics in the latest version of this AI music maker. You simply tell the robot what vibe you want, and it creates a soulless 30-second or three-minute track. It’s not high art, but if you’re just making an animated birthday card it’s probably fine. Like video, AI clients have high thresholds for AI music.
