Google Maps’ Gemini AI addition is finally rolling out

Google Maps’ Gemini-powered navigation is officially starting to roll out more widely, the next step in an overhaul first teased by Google earlier this month. When Mashable first covered the update, we saw Google’s push toward a “more conversational and intuitive” navigation experience built on Gemini, including historical-based directions and the ability to ask complex, multi-step questions.

According to 9to5Google, the feature is now visible to users in all navigation modes, not just driving. This means walking, cycling and public transit directions also benefit from Gemini’s advanced voice control and contextual assistance. The outlet also reports that the traditional four-color microphone icon has officially been replaced with the Gemini Spark — another sign that Google Assistant is nearing its expiration date.

In practice, this means that you can now ask your phone to do everything you would normally ask it, directly through Maps while you navigate. The rollout includes all the conversational questions originally highlighted in Google’s blog post — like “Finding a budget-friendly restaurant with vegan options on my route” or asking “How’s parking there?” — but 9to5Google notes that users can also issue practical commands like “add stop,” “avoid toll,” or “show alternative route.” The Assistant can also handle common tasks, like calling contacts, sending texts, or checking into your next meeting.
