Google is fighting the defamation battle Meta caved on

Google filed a motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought by anti-corporate diversity activist Robbie Starbuck, who claimed Google’s AI exposed her to sexual harassment allegations and falsely associated her with a white nationalist.

Starbuck is seeking $15 million in damages from Google. But the company said in its filing that their claims merely represent “abuse of developer tools to create hallucinations.” According to Google or any actual person misled by the alleged claims, Starbuck does not identify what signals it used to generate the outputs at issue. Starbuck did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Undoubtedly, Google may ultimately choose a similar route as Meta to resolve the claims. But at least for now, she’s choosing to fight them in court.
