Google fixes glitch serving ads to YouTube Premium users

YouTube Premium subscribers, who were promised an ad-free experience at $13.99 a month, got annoying ads in the middle of playlists this week, in what clearly appears to be a Google glitch.

As Android Authority reports, the glitch was first flagged by Premium users who were listening to YouTube Music on their Google Home and Nest devices. On February 20, on the Google Home subreddit, users reported ads continuing to appear even after resetting their devices, suggesting that the problem was at the account level.

Users also reported experiencing long pauses before songs played, low volume, casting problems, and problems with their YouTube Music algorithm. One user said that he was facing problems playing YouTube Music on home devices since last year, which led him to cancel his account. Another user wrote, “They must have botched a release.”

The official Google Nest community account initially responded to the complaints, saying it was investigating the reports, though it did not specifically mention the advertising issue. The post reads, “We are aware of an issue playing YouTube Music on some Google Home devices. We are investigating and will provide you with an update as soon as possible. Thank you for your patience.”

In a follow-up comment, the Google community account said the issue has been resolved and asked users to flag any recurring issues.

Google is making massive changes to its smart home ecosystem, including new Gemini-powered smart speakers and indoor security cameras like Nest products.
