Giannis Antetokounmpo scrubs Milwaukee from his social media

game

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo removed most mentions of the Milwaukee Bucks from his social media accounts after the loss.
  • The Bucks star changed his profile imagery to his Greek national team uniform and only left championship-related posts.
  • Antetokounmpo has previously expressed his desire to continually compete for titles, linking his actions to the team’s struggles.
  • This is not the first time Antetokounmpo has made significant changes to his social media accounts.

Less than 24 hours after Milwaukee suffered a disappointing loss to the last-place Wizards in Washington, D.C. on December 1, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo cleared his social media accounts of most mentions of the organization.

This comes after his decision not to speak to a small media contingent after the game.

On Instagram, Snapchat and X, Antetokounmpo changed his profile imagery to his Greek national team uniform and changed his profile description to simply “athlete”.

The only photos he left of himself in Bucks uniform on Instagram were of the NBA Cup championship in 2024 and the NBA title in 2021. On X, he explored all the posts after the 2021 Championships.

Decisions made regarding what to retain and what to remove regarding the Bucks organization are related to his oft-stated goals of wanting to consistently contend for titles. At Media Day on 30 September, he said:

“Guys, there’s truth every summer. In every report. This is what I’ve been saying my entire career – I want to be on a team that allows me, gives me a chance to win championships and compete at a high level.

“I think it’s a disservice to basketball, it’s a disservice to the game that you don’t want to compete at a high level, don’t want your season to end in April. So, it’s pretty much the same. This isn’t the first time. I had the same thoughts last year, I had the same thoughts two years ago, I had the same thoughts five years ago — yes, 2020 — so that will never change. I want to be one of the best, I want to compete with the best. Do it, and I want to win another championship and that’s it.”

So, it’s understandable why fans, media, and even other general managers might make the connection between Antetokounmpo’s social-media movements and the team’s poor play so far — the team is 9-13 and he has not been a part of a Bucks team that has struggled so badly since the beginning of his career.

He is also coming off another major offseason after which he will be able to sign another max extension in October.

But, it is also important to mention that this has happened before also.

Antetokounmpo quickly deleted his Instagram and Twitter (now X) a few hours after Kobe Bryant’s death was announced on January 26, 2020. It took several days to reopen those accounts.

The Bucks will play the East-leading Detroit Pistons on December 3 at Fiserv Forum.
