The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art, a passion project star wars The producer and his wife and partner, Mellody Hobson, have been working for over a decade, exploring potential sites in San Francisco and Chicago before Los Angeles won out.
While there will be a small section dedicated to the galaxy far, far away – Lucas, of course, knows there will be fan demand for it – the Lucas Museum has a much broader purpose, aiming to celebrate all forms of storytelling.
“Stories are mythology, and when depicted, they help humans understand the mysteries of life,” Lucas said in a press release.
Hodson said, “This is a museum of people’s art – the images are depictions of the beliefs we live with every day. For that reason, this art belongs to everyone. Our hope is that as people walk through the galleries, they will see themselves and their humanity reflected.”
The museum’s website describes what visitors will be able to see and experience in the collection, which dates back to Lucas’s college days and his first art purchase: “a depiction of time-traveling caveman Alley Oop.”
Decades later, the artwork represents a wide range of famous names and art styles, including Norman Rockwell, Jesse Wilcox Smith, Maxfield Parrish, N.C. Wyeth, Winsor McCay, Frank Frazetta, George Herriman, Jack Kirby, Robert Crumb, Frida Kahlo, Jacob Lawrence, Charles White, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Robert Colescott, Judith F. Baca and Diego Rivera.
And, yes, the Lucas Museum also houses “the entire Lucas Archives (1971-2012) – original Lucasfilm material kept by George Lucas after the sale of the company – reflecting his dedication to storytelling in every medium.”
The museum building, designed by Ma Yansong, is sculptural and eye-catching and surrounded by green space designed by Mia Lehrer; In addition to its many galleries, it will feature two theaters, a library, a restaurant and café, a retail store, and more.
