Nearly three years removed from winning a title, the Denver Nuggets continue to remain in the championship mix, thanks in large part to the basketball wizardry of Nikola Jokic. After 7-game losing streaks in the Western Conference Semifinals each of the last two seasons, a slight overhaul was made, largely by shedding the Michael Porter Jr. contract and adding some significant depth on the wings with the return of Cam Johnson (acquired in the MPJ trade with the Nets), Tim Hardaway Jr., and Bruce Brown along with Jokic (Jonas Valanciunas). Recent injuries to Christian Braun and Aaron Gordon could derail a promising start to the season, but the general feeling is that a fully healthy Denver may be the only obstacle standing in Oklahoma City’s way to a repeat.
San Antonio meanwhile is missing their resident basketball wunderkind, but they have managed to hold down the fort in the wake of Victor Wembanyama’s absence. Despite being winners of 4 of their last 5, tonight begins a run of challenging road games that will continue through the first few weeks of December. With Wembley out for at least another week or possibly longer, the rest of the Spurs will have to bring their A+ game every night if they hope to maintain standing in the West. That’s especially true tonight, going up against perennial MVP candidate Jokic.
