Game Preview: Islanders vs Flyers

A tale of two special teams

It’s a tale of two special teams for the Islanders.

The penalty kill has not allowed a single goal in six games – going 10 for 10 in that span – and has eliminated 38 of its last 41 opportunities.

The power play is currently 0-23 in the last seven games and 5-57 in the last 18 games. While Roy felt Isles’ power play was not sharp on an 0-for-4 night against Boston (he referred to Isles being “too sweet” in his entries) he saw good signs from the man advantage. Roy said the Islanders need to get better shots on net and hoped an ugly goal would boost confidence and increase the power play.

statistics on shots

The Islanders took a season-high 45 shots against the Bruins on Wednesday, but…

The Islanders are 0-4-2 in their last six games when recording 40 or more shots on goal (per team statistician Eric Hornik).

The Isles have outscored opponents 110-55 over their last three games, but have allowed just two goals (not including the shootout tally) in that span.

Defensively, the Islanders have been stingy lately, allowing 14 shots on Wednesday. Another Hornik gem – the Isles had allowed 33 shots over their last two games, the fourth-fewest, two-game stretch in team history and the fewest since October 12-15, 2002, when they allowed 27 to Washington and Nashville.
