Florida launches investigation into OpenAI

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeyer is launching an investigation into OpenAI over public safety and national security risks, as previously reported reuters. In a statement Thursday, Uthmeyer said there are concerns that OpenAI’s data and technology are “falling into the hands of America’s enemies like the Chinese Communist Party.”

Uthmeyer also says that OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been “linked to criminal behavior” related to child sexual abuse material and the “encouragement” of self-harm. He further said that ChatGPT may have been used to “help” the person suspected of carrying out the Florida State University shooting in April 2025. This week, the family of a man killed during the FSU shooting filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the suspect of being in constant communication with ChatGPIT.

Uthmeyer says, “AI should exist to complement, support, and advance the human race, not cause an existential crisis or our ultimate destruction.” “As Big Tech is introducing these technologies, they should not be putting our safety and security at risk – they simply cannot.” Uthmeyer says subpoenas related to the investigation are “forthcoming.”
