Explosion hits near US Embassy in Norway, no injuries

An explosion near the US Embassy in Oslo on Sunday caused minor damage but no injuries, police in the Norwegian capital said.

A loud explosion was heard at about 1 a.m. (0000 UTC) near the embassy in western Oslo, the Oslo Police Department said.

Local media quoted eyewitnesses as saying that they saw smoke rising from the area.

What did the police say?

Police spokesman Michael Delemire told public broadcaster NRK that the explosion occurred near the entrance to the embassy’s consular section.

“At around 1:00 we received several reports of an explosion. We arrived shortly after and confirmed that there had been an explosion that targeted the US embassy,” NRK quoted Delemir as saying.

“There has been minor damage,” he said.

Police said a search was on for the culprits, but did not provide further details about the nature and cause of the blast.

Delamire said no other explosive devices were found in the area.

Heavy police deployment near US Embassy in Oslo

A large area around the embassy complex was cordoned off amid heavy police deployment.

Local media reported that police officers were stopping cars driving near the area.

“Police are negotiating with the embassy and there are no reports of injuries,” the Oslo Police Department said in another statement.

There was no immediate comment from US officials in Oslo or the US State Department.

US embassies in the Middle East are on high alert regarding the Iran war.

Delemire said there was no immediate indication that the demonstrations in Oslo were linked to Middle East tensions.

“We’re not linking it to conflict. It’s too early for that,” he told Norway’s TV2.
