ExcitementThe time jump is officially a reality now that the full trailer for the long-awaited season three has arrived.
The upcoming new season of HBO’s smash hit series starring Zendaya jumps forward five years from the end of season two when the show returns on April 12. The official return date was revealed on Wednesday with a high-octane, nail-biting more than two-minute first look (see below).
Creator Sam Levinson recently revealed (with photos) that the core group of former high school friends are now young adults with a time jump: starring addict Rue (Zendaya) is south of the border in Mexico and in debt to drug dealer Laurie (Martha Kelly); Sidney Sweeney’s unhappy Cassie and Jacob Elordi’s Nate are engaged and living in the suburbs, and eventually marry; Hunter Schafer’s Jules is in art school; Alexa Demi’s Maddie is working at a Hollywood talent agency; And Maude Apatow’s Lexie is working as an assistant to a listener played by newcomer Sharon Stone.
The trailer expands on those updates, as it follows Rue’s life after high school. “I didn’t know if life was exactly what I wanted, but somehow, for the first time, I started to believe,” she tells the trailer, speaking in the past tense. But his life is thrown into disarray when Laurie arrives and reminds him that he owes him money, and Laurie appears to be just the beginning of the danger ahead for Rue.
Rue is also reminded of her ex Jules, and they are seen in a brief reunion in the trailer. Meanwhile, Cassie is filming NSFW videos for the Internet, which angers fiancé Nate, saying, “I work all day and my bride-to-be is all over the Internet.” She replies, “I was just creating content.” Their marriage is also shown in the trailer.
Levinson said that “living outside the safety net of school” is what the new season is all about. The writer/director/executive producer previously said, “The one thing we all agree on is that we can’t go back to high school — although many shows have 30-year-old high school students, we don’t.” “Five years felt like a natural place (to jump) because if they had gone to college they would have been out of college at that time.”
New cast members this season include Danielle Deadwyler, Eli Roth, Natasha Lyonne, Rosalia, Marshon Lynch, Sam Trammell, and Asante Black, to name a few. Eric Dane, who was recently diagnosed with ALS, Chloe Cherry, Dominic Fike, Nika King, and Colman Domingo are returning, but Storm Reid, Austin Abrams, and Javon Walton are missing from the cast this season. Angus Cloud, who played fan-favorite drug dealer Fezco, died in July 2023.
