In film terms, this weekend it’s Emerald Fennell and her Wuthering Heights. But did you know, or perhaps forgot, that she came this close to writing a Zatanna solo movie?

It’s 2021, a program she was able to access shortly after delivery promising young woman. It is no longer moving forward, and as she told Josh Horowitz on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the script she wrote then came about because she was “probably going through it at the time.”

As she tells it, Fennell had just finished promise of When JJ Abrams gave her the chance to write Zatanna. The experience was “[a] In order to connect emotionally with the character, he planned to make it about “a woman in the middle of a nervous breakdown”, which would have come up in the script, an idea that would not have occurred to Abrams or Warner Bros., due to it being “too dark” and not fitting in with the genre – he vaguely teased some of the scenes he wrote were things no other filmmaker thought of. Will happen.

By Fennell’s own admission, she has not gone back and read her old scripts in years. Although she thinks she would be kinder to it now, she still wishes she could have given Abrams and Warner Bros. “what they wanted”. [and] Provide something amazing for them.” (And when asked about doing any DC work in general, she said she’s more interested in doing her own work.) Once that movie got canned, there have been no official offers on bringing Zatanna back to live-action with another movie or even a show. For now, fans of the character can look forward to Jamal Campbell’s new solo comic coming in April.
