An earthquake was reported in Surry County on Sunday morning.
Let me take you this morning from Charlotte to Boone, where it’s cold and wet. The temperature is hovering right around zero, and that makes me more concerned about some of the slick spots out there. You see, the roads in downtown Boone on King Street look predominantly wet, but as you get a little further out of town and into some of those cooler valleys, there can actually be some slick spots that have moisture coming through. Temperatures here in the Triad are cooler than in the west. We’re sitting in the mid and upper 30s, so not cold enough for anything other than normal rain. We’ve had some rain here in the western Piedmont and foothills, but where it’s been cold, temperatures have been at or below zero in the mountains. This creates a mixture of freezing rain in winter. Kind of a messy combination. When this moisture is moving over the mountains, some hail particles have probably got mixed here. You see those pink and purple colors there, picking up light wintry precipitation and some of the Watauga Ash Allegany Grayson counties, maybe even Western Wilkes or Western Surry two. So for the mountains out there in the Blue Ridge this morning, be aware that there may be some slick spots on the way to your church, especially stairs and sidewalks and bridges. They have a Winter Weather Advisory in effect until this afternoon. All these must change terrain quickly. Temperatures are going to rise above zero this morning, and things will start to cool down in the mountains around mid-morning. For the rest of us, this type of moisture sticks around. There will be some clouds, a few showers and occasional light showers throughout the day. Today, a cold front is approaching, but it is moving quite slowly, so it will take a long time to move through. And that will result in a kind of cool, cloudy and wet Sunday for us. So it is not the most beautiful day of the season. It’s nice to nap inside and watch football this afternoon. The chances of rain will be much lower as it will be sporadic, but we will still be kind of wet in the mid 40’s for highs here in the Triad. Temperatures in the foothills will reach the mid 40s this afternoon before the chance of rain subsides in the afternoon and evening. For the mountains. We have had impact signs this morning due to a winter weather advisory. Also, some slick spots on the roads are likely after lunch with high temperatures reaching the 40S after noon today. This is just the beginning of a much colder and active weather pattern that will develop over the next at least seven days. We’ve got several systems on the way and we’re ready to reach the first few days of December. So we’ve got today, and then our next one will come Monday night through Tuesday. What does this system look like? It also feels a bit wet and cold. As we head into Tuesday, a big, widespread soaking rain is expected to arrive Monday night and move north and east through the Piedmont. The journey on Tuesday morning looks quite wet before the rain starts and tapers off for the rest of the day. It’s going to be a big soaking rain for us. It will be cold, it will not be fun, but this is what we need to deal with the drought situation. No doubt we have been needing rain for some time now. We can talk about the possibility of up to an inch of rain in the area across the Piedmont from this system. On the other hand, in the mountains where there is more cold there is more moisture. We may have some freezing rain and snow Monday night and Tuesday. In the high country, some models suggest about a quarter-inch of snow will be possible, which is certainly enough to cause some problems. So we want you to stay tuned to the forecast. Tuesday is a weather impact day with a chance for that freezing rain and potentially some mountain snow. We dry it out after that system for Wednesday and Thursday, before potentially another cool and wet system arrives on Friday and beyond.
