Driverless Waymo seemingly drives straight into oncoming traffic in viral video

Maybe it’s me, but driving on the wrong side of the road definitely doesn’t seem like a good idea. However, I am just an ordinary human being, not the technological marvel that is a driverless car.

A recently viral video shows a driverless Waymo robotaxi driving straight into oncoming traffic in Austin, Texas. The post has received a lot of upvotes on Reddit. In the video, you see the robotaxi crawling in the wrong direction and stop, staring at oncoming traffic. Apparently, its right turn signal is on before turning left into the gas station. The caption reads, “Just another day in Austin.”

Perfectly executed maneuver, no notes.

According to MySanAntonio, the incident happened on a frontage road near I-35 in Austin. The local news source reported that neither the Austin Police Department nor the Austin Department of Transportation and Public Works had received reports on the issue. A spokesperson for the company told MySanAntonio: “Safety is our top priority at Waymo, for those who choose to ride with us and those with whom we share the roads. We take situations like this seriously and are committed to improving road safety through our ongoing learning and experience.”

It’s been a rough month for Waymo and security concerns. Earlier this month, it issued a software recall after reports of its robotaxis illegally passing school buses. A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) investigation found that Vemos had passed buses in at least 19 incidents in Austin.
