Diego Pavia’s Mom Antoinette Padilla Goes Viral Again After ESPN Can’t Stop Filming Her During His Historic Game

This was going to be Diego Pavia’s night. The Vanderbilt quarterback had perhaps the greatest performance in school history, defeating Kentucky 45–17 and rewriting the record books, while casually walking out of the game as if he had led his team to practice rather than delivering SEC-level mayhem. And then college football had other plans. While Pavia was handing it to the Wildcats, the Internet handed it to Pavia’s mother, Antoinette Padilla.

And honestly? It was fantastic.

The record that should have been the title… but wasn’t

Now let’s focus on some actual football.

Pavia completed 33 of 39 pass attempts for 484 yards and scored five touchdowns; For some fun, he ran for 48 additional yards and a score. All this despite the final series of plays not being finished.

His 484 yards broke the Vanderbilt single-game passing record of 44 years previously, set by Whit Taylor in 1981. By all accounts, he delivered a game fit for the Heisman Trophy.

However, every time he dropped pennies on the field, ESPN brought their cameras straight to his mother.

Enter: Antoinette Padilla, internet icon

Antoinette Padilla looked like a reality television game-day Debbie amidst all the Vanderbilt fans wearing a jersey and black shoes. She was living her perfect life as a soccer-loving mom, dancing, cheering, and generally being there, and that act alone drove social media completely crazy.

ESPN couldn’t resist. Every big play?

Cut mother.

Another touchdown?

Cut mom.

commercial break?

Mother’s time.

He had noticed. And he had ideas. The loud ones.

Social media reaction: Memes received ‘cruel’

Some people were thrilled. Some people were surprised. Some were just pretending to be shocked. Everyone had their own entertainment. Some of these responses to God’s love:

  • “Get this family out of college football immediately.”

  • “Do you all think Diego is embarrassed by his mother’s clothing and behavior? To be fair to his mother, she plays it well, but just think about it if that’s the case

  • Was your mother out there.”

  • “If I ever see my mother fussing in the stands…”

  • “Crazy behavior of your own mother.”

  • “This bitch is like Tempu Stifler mom. Best 3 out of 10. Volume up to 100”

  • “QB1’s mom is a groupie yes I’m on Vandy”

  • “I understand why his mom is single. ‘Those party years’ never went away and now he’s doing something like this.”

  • “I’m a firm believer in ‘you do you’, as long as it’s not bothering me. If it were my mom… boy I would go crazy, hahaha”

Are they harsh? Of course they are tough! Did this discourage the Internet? No.

Padilla quickly became the game’s darling, a viral personality in this never-ending SEC drama.

In other news, Theo Von… taking it to the ground?

To add some extra chaos to this story, comedian Theo Vaughn became a part of it.

And it looks like Vaughn was seen with Padilla on the field after the game. The Internet quickly pointed out how last October, he crashed a podcasting appearance that Pavia was making just to put his arm around Pavia’s mom.

According to The Sporting News, Vaughn confirmed to ESPN’s Cole Cubelic that he had placed a bet with his team’s quarterback:

If Vanderbilt won an important game, Diego would take her on a date with his mother.

And it gets even better.

This was followed by Pavia’s tweet:

“‘What @TheoVon forgot is that I said it was a done deal and only after he asked @tatemcrae to take him on an A1 date in Nashville. Twitter, get over it.'”

The guy is talking like an SEC quarterback who knows what he’s worth.

While it’s unclear whether or not this actually happened, Vaughn made one thing clear to AL.com:

“My goal is, I’d like to marry a nurse one day. I don’t even know if I’ll do that. I’d love to be her friend. I don’t want to be like her stepdad or anything.”

Padilla is a nurse. the plot thickens.

The human side: this is why Diego loves his mother so passionately

After all the memes were out, a sweet reference emerged. In The Athletic’s interview with Pavia, praise was not given to her mother’s shoes or screen time, but to her strength.

“My mom, she’s a hard hat, a lunch pail. She grew up in the same house with 13 brothers and sisters.”

The article also mentions that as a child Diego never realized that whenever his mother claimed she was not hungry and only ate a little of her dinner, that was actually the time she allowed her children to eat.

It’s this kind of history that makes a college expedition a Hollywood movie. Padilla isn’t just the mom with the viral video. He is a survivor. A provider. A mother who fought tirelessly to allow her son to stand there.

And if she decides to dance in black shoes on national television? He has earned it.
