Hakeem Jeffries says leadership change at DHS isn’t enough to restart funding

Hello and welcome to American Politics Live Blog.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said a leadership change is not enough to reopen the government and begin refunding the Department of Homeland Security.

It came as Republican Senator Thom Tillis said he believed White House adviser Stephen Miller “should go” and that his role in the Trump administration has been a “big problem.”

When the senior senator representing North Carolina was asked on CNN’s State of the Union whether he thought Miller should go, during a conversation about the administration’s immigration actions, he replied to host Jake Tapper, “Oh, sure I should go.”

“He’s not concerned about the substance. He’s more concerned about the form, but I also think he has a major influence on the operation of the Cabinet. And I believe we have qualified Cabinet members who are sometimes doing less than what they want to do because of his direction and his outside influence. He’s a big problem in this administration. He has been from the beginning,” Tillis said.

Tillis affirmed support for selecting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to replace Kristi Noem, claiming she believed Mullin would be independent of Miller’s influence, even though Mullin repeated similar lies about the murders by federal agents of Alex Prettie and Renee Good.

Tillis, who is not seeking re-election this year, was the first Republican to call for the resignation or firing of DHS Secretary Noem.

But Jeffries said on NBC’s Meet the Press with Kristen Welker that a leadership change alone is not enough.

Jefferies said, “We want a situation where ICE is actually conducting itself like every other law enforcement agency in the country, not using taxpayer money to brutalize or in some cases kill American citizens.”
