Denver is bracing for its first blizzard of the season on Wednesday, with up to 7 inches of rain expected in some areas, causing potentially dangerous commutes.
Front Range residents should be prepared for a choppy commute Wednesday morning as the metro area’s first heavy snowfall of the season is expected late Tuesday into Wednesday.
The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team has issued a Weather Impact Alert Wednesday morning as a strong cold front moving through the area will bring a few inches of accumulation, creating hazardous driving conditions during rush hour.
A winter weather advisory for the Denver metro area and surrounding areas begins at midnight Wednesday through Wednesday evening.
“We’re likely to see a few inches of snow Wednesday morning and some major traffic disruptions,” said Chris Bianchi, meteorologist with the 9NEWS Weather Impact Team. “That’s going to be the big takeaway from this next storm system.”
The 9NEWS Weather Impact Team said the system, driven by North Slope flow, will unevenly impact areas across the metro. Western and southern parts of the metro area could see rainfall totals of more than 3 inches, making Wednesday morning’s drive especially risky for commuters in those areas.
The heaviest snowfall is expected south of Denver, with Douglas and Arapahoe counties potentially seeing up to 7 inches of snowfall. Central Denver should expect 2-7 inches, while northern and eastern areas, including Fort Collins, Greeley and the East Plains, are expected to see only an inch or so of rain.
