Cyclone Ditwah: Are Chennai schools closed today? IMD issues orange alert for coastal Tamil Nadu

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several coastal districts of Tamil Nadu, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday, December 1, as the low pressure system intensifies over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

The IMD said in the wake of the deep depression following Cyclonic Storm Ditvaha, “heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely over Tamil Nadu, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema, Telangana” on December 1.

Are schools closed in Chennai?

Yes, schools and all educational institutions in Chennai as well as other districts of Tamil Nadu including Chengalpattu and Tiruvallur will remain closed today, December 1.

The Tamil Nadu government has declared holiday in all educational institutions as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety following heavy rains and severe waterlogging due to Cyclone Ditvaah.

This decision affects students of all government, private and aided schools in these areas.

Which districts of Tamil Nadu are on high alert today?

The weather agency has kept many districts on alert. The orange alert is currently in effect for:

  • Thiruvallur
  • Chennai
  • Kanchipuram
  • Chengalpattu
  • Mayiladuthrayi
  • Nagapattinam
  • Thiruvarur
  • karaikal

The IMD also issued a yellow alert for the state including Villupuram, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari, predicting heavy rainfall at isolated places.

Puducherry schools will remain closed today

As heavy rains are expected in Puducherry due to the impact of Cyclone Ditvaah, Education Minister A Namasivayam announced that both government and private schools in four areas of the Union Territory will remain closed on Monday.

The IMD has issued a warning for fishermen for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts and Comorin area and said in its weather bulletin, “Strong wind speed reaching 55-65 to 75 kmph, and is likely to reduce gradually, reaching 45-55 to 65 kmph by morning of December 1.”

As residents of Tamil Nadu anxiously wait for the storm to subside, sea conditions are expected to remain rough till the morning of December 1 and gradually improve thereafter.
