Now, the postseason looks like a realistic possibility, as just a month ago it seemed like a long-term possibility. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer is not thinking too far ahead and just wants to continue the strong performances.
“We’ll play anyone, anywhere,” Schottenheimer said. “I think you can see that with what we’ve done the last couple of weeks. The moment isn’t too big for us, we just play. And then we know the fourth quarter is coming, and when the fourth quarter comes, we know we’re going to find a way to win. And I think you just keep doing that.”
There’s a lot of confidence building for the Cowboys, who not only won their three straight games in a 12-day span, but also defeated the Eagles and Chiefs, both teams that played in last year’s Super Bowl LIX, in a span of just five days. Schottenheimer heard the noise about this three-game stretch for Dallas in his first season as head coach.
“I hear everybody talking, ‘Oh hey, they have to play the Eagles, and then they have to play the Chiefs, and then the Lions and the Vikings.’ We are going to play it. “We’ll play anybody,” Schottenheimer said.
“And the reason you play those games is if we have a chance and we get to the playoffs, it proves that you’re beating teams that have been to the Super Bowl. You’re beating teams that have won championships. And that gives everybody in that room confidence to play anybody in the world.”
The confidence is equally strong in the Dallas locker room. Quarterback Dak Prescott, who has scored nine touchdowns and thrown just two interceptions in Dallas’ last three games, feels the Cowboys are in the driver’s seat of their destiny.
“We can be whatever we want to be,” Prescott said. “Everything is in front of us. I was just telling the offense when we’re on our knees at the end of the game, but it’s not going to happen next Thursday. It’s going to happen Sunday when we get in the building.
“It’s just taking one day at a time, putting everything in, understanding that we win during the week with our preparation and we just have to come here and play the game we love and play it for free. All these wins, everything they’ve done has given us more confidence.”
With that confidence also comes the reality of knowing that the job is not done yet, and there is still work to be done. Dallas heads to Detroit next Thursday, where with a win over the Lions, they can overtake them in the NFC playoff picture.
Cowboy ideas aren’t put there. Instead, they want to stick with the process that got them on the hot streak.
“We’re going to continue to play football,” Schottenheimer said. “We’re playing good football; we’re on a three-game winning streak. We need to get to four games. And then, I think if you look at things that way, and it makes the process easier, and if we keep winning football games, we’ll see what happens in the end.”
