The truly free ride for ChatGPT may soon stop as OpenAI may be nearing the introduction of ads. As first discovered by Tibor Blaho on X, the beta version of ChatGPT’s Android app contains lines of code that heavily reference advertisements. According to the post, the 1.2025.329 beta version includes mentions of “ad features,” “search ads,” and “marketed content.” Although this is not a version that is available to the public yet, it may be a sign that OpenAI is ready to open the advertising floodgates.
The discovery follows a report Information Earlier this month it was claimed that OpenAI was considering including advertising in ChatGPAT based on memories or user chats. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously discussed how advertisements could be included in ChatGPIT, but has never offered a definitive stance. During an event at Harvard Business School last year, Altman said that the combination of ads and AI is “particularly troubling to me” and that it is “a last resort for us as a business model,” but that he is “not completely against them.”
Months later, Altman reiterated on the first episode of the OpenAI podcast that the company is not against embedding ads in the platform, but has not been able to figure out the exact method. Although the recently discovered lines of code do not reveal where ads will be included, OpenAI may consider ads in the free tier that already provides limits on messages, memory, and overall logic.
