When Christopher Nolan, a filmmaker known for making bigger movies than basically anyone else, says that his new movie will be his biggest yet, you have to pay attention. The director is working hard to complete the work odyssey, The adaptation of Homer’s epic Greek poem, and in a new interview, explained why that was the film he wanted to do next.
“Emma [Thomas, Nolan’s producer] “When we first announced the project it was the best: It’s fundamental,” Nolan told Empire Magazine. “It’s everything. I mean, it really encompasses all the stories… As a filmmaker, you’re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before. And what I noticed is that all these great legendary cinematic works that I grew up with — the Ray Harryhausen movies and other things — I never saw them with the kind of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do. Is.
Think about “all these great legendary cinematic works” that Nolan is probably referring to here. Of course, he mentions Harryhausen, but he also means things like star wars, 2001, gladiator, Etcetera. They are also, at their core, “mythical”. So basically what they mean is, “Okay, that was big, but what if I made it even bigger?” Which is madness.
To capture this epic spectacle, Nolan revealed he shot two million feet of IMAX film and spent four months shooting scenes at sea. “It’s so original!” Nolan talked about shooting in the ocean. “I’ve been working on it for the last four months. We found actors who play the crew of Odysseus’s ship in real places, on real waves. And yes, it’s huge and terrifying and wonderful and charitable, as circumstances change. We really wanted to see how difficult those journeys must have been for people. And the leaps of faith that were being taken into an unknown, unknown world.”
It sounds like basically everything odyssey Pursuing an “unmapped, uncharted world”. It is the first theatrical film to be shot entirely in IMAX. The first theatrical film to sell movie tickets a year earlier. And, soon, we’ll get to know more and even get to see a trailer.
Starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal and many more, odyssey To be released on July 17, 2026.
