Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert heads back to the locker room with trainers after a touchdown drive in the first quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Herbert was ruled questionable to return and was replaced by backup Trey Lance for the next offensive drive.

Herbert suffered an injury to his left hand when he was hit by a ball from Jeremy Chinn during a scramble in the open field. Herbert remained in the game and completed a touchdown to Quentin Johnston to give the Chargers an early 7–0 lead.

Midway through the Chargers’ second possession Herbert was wearing a padded white glove, with his left ring finger and left middle finger stuck together on the outside of the glove. Lance remained in the game for the first nine games of Los Angeles’ ensuing possession before Herbert returned to the game for the third and fifth games. A false start penalty favored the Chargers but Herbert completed a 10-yard pass to Keenan Allen to keep the drive alive. He later connected with Oronde Gadsden on a 27-yard pass to reach the 2-yard line, but the drive ended when Herbert threw an interception to Las Vegas’ Q Blue Kelly in the end zone.
