Canyon Deflectr RLS Bike Helmet Review: Game-Changing Safety Technology

Over the course of several hours and a few dozen trail miles, I had very little to say about the Deflector RLS, which is exactly what you want in a bike helmet. In other words, when a bike helmet is made well, you should forget it’s there.

Aside from the odd choice of strap (which, as I mentioned, I ran out of quickly), the only gripe I have is how the Deflector RLS is, as of this writing, only offered in one of two color options: matte black or metallic olive. Although they are both nice and ubiquitous, those of us who ride under the brutal southern sun know the value of a white or light-colored helmet.

The sample helmet I was sent came in a really interesting blocked black/white color combo that both looked good and helped keep the temperature around my skull down a bit. Here’s hoping there are more color options on the horizon. According to Canyon’s website, the large vents at the top of the deflector, combined with the large intake and exhaust vents, work together to keep your head cool. Still, sometimes, in hot weather, white can be a rider’s best friend.

According to RLS, the Deflector is the first in a line soon to be available in bike, motorcycle, climbing and even construction helmets. And at just $160, it’s much easier on the wallet than some of its contemporary high-end helmets, which can easily run in the $300 range.
