Bungie isn’t taking any prisoners when it comes to cheating in its upcoming extraction shooter, Marathon. In a detailed blog post explaining its anti-cheating measures, Bungie took a very declarative position against those caught trying to gain unfair advantages.
“We are taking a tough stance against cheating and anyone found to be cheating or committing fraud will be permanently banned from playing Marathon, with no second chance given,” the blog post said. It says there will also be an appeal system.
However, Bungie’s anti-cheating standards go beyond punishment. In the blog post, Bungie detailed that Marathon’s dedicated servers have full authority over movement, shooting, actions, and inventory. Since these key actions are server dependent, this will translate into easier gunplay for players as well as prevention of cheats related to teleportation, unlimited ammo or damage manipulation. Bungie is also incorporating a “Fog of War” system that limits an individual player’s client to only seeing certain areas of the map, which should prevent wall hacks, ESP cheating or loot revealers.
On top of these strong rules, Bungie is using BattleEye, a kernel-level anticheat seen with other popular multiplayer shooters such as Fortnite, rainbow six siege And destiny 2. Bungie said that in the event of a disconnect, you will be able to reconnect to your run without interruption. If players are unable to reconnect due to an issue with the servers, Bungie said it will “attempt to refund starting gear to all affected players.”
The marathon isn’t until March 5, but Bungie is doing a preview weekend with a Server Slam event starting on February 26. Still, it’s clear that Bungie already wants to get ahead of the competition, as Ark Raiders, another recently released extraction shooter, is dealing with its own cheating problem. To address the increase in cheating, the game’s developer, Embark Studios, implemented a three-strike system, which some players have criticized as being too generous.
