Bulls had internal talks about trade for Chicago native Anthony Davis, per report

After a strong 6-1 start to the season, the Chicago Bulls have calmed down considerably and are back in familiar territory in 10th in the Eastern Conference at 9-10.

As the trade season approaches, with December 15 being the date most restrictions are lifted for players signing deals this summer, the Bulls will have to decide if they want to be buyers this offseason. The fast start certainly showed this group’s ability to compete, but now they must determine if it is worth pursuing again or if it was just an early season mirage.

Those conversations are taking place inside the Bulls facility, and according to ESPN, the biggest name in those internal discussions is Chicago native Anthony Davis. Some in Chicago see him as a solution to their weak defense and a strong veteran player to bolster their young, talented roster. Others in the organization believe it is too early to make such a move, but according to the report the general consensus is that even if they made an offer to Davis, they would not be willing to break up their young core to get him or another veteran.

The real question is how desperate the Mavs are to move Davis. After Dallas fired general manager Nico Harrison last month, there was hope around the league that the Mavs would at least listen to offers for the star center. Finding a fit for the 32-year-old Davis isn’t going to be easy given his contract and injury history, and Dallas will never come close to getting the kind of return they gave up to get him by trading for Luka Doncic in another Davis trade.

If the Bulls are unwilling to part with their young core — which certainly includes Josh Giddy and Mateus Buzelis, and potentially also Coby White — then it’s hard to see how they’ll be able to make an offer that Dallas will be attracted to, even short of understanding Davis’ trade value. If White were to be included, it could make the conversations inside the Mavs front office more significant.

Still, given Davis’ ties to Chicago, any version of the trade rumor report would link the Bulls to Davis. Although right now it seems like it would be surprising to see the Bulls make such a move, especially after their decline, but if they can bounce back and recapture their early season form to get back into playoff contention, perhaps things will heat up again before the deadline.
