British man falls from TUI-operated cruise ship near Tenerife

A search is on for a British man who fell from a cruise ship off the coast of Tenerife.

The Spanish coast guard said it was coordinating search and rescue efforts for the 76-year-old man as of 09:48 local time (09:48 GMT) on Thursday.

The incident occurred on board the Marella Explorer 2, operated by TUI, while positioned just north-west of the Spanish island.

TUI’s Marella Cruz said the man “was seen entering the water as the ship headed towards La Gomera”, adding that he was supporting his family and working with local authorities.

In a statement, the coast guard said the ship took part in the search before it docked in Santa Cruz de Tenerife early Friday.

Rescue boats, two helicopters and a specialist search and rescue aircraft have been deployed in the area.

Local media reports said the ship was on its way I returned from the Portuguese island of Madeira to the Canary Islands when this incident happened.

It is believed to have departed from Tenerife on 21 November for a seven-day visit to the Canaries and other nearby islands.

The BBC has contacted the Foreign Office for comment.
