Economic impact and workforce investment

India is British Airways’ second largest market after the United States, making it strategically important for the company’s global business.

De Groot said BA is creating jobs in India and supporting regional economies while promoting the best of Britain abroad.

Crew bases are located in every Indian city the airline serves, and the COO described local staff as essential to providing personalized and premium customer service while overcoming language barriers.

The airline has invested heavily in building its Indian workforce. Its call center in Gurugram employs approximately 2,000 employees and provides 24×7 support to customers in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific.

BA also operates five Indian cabin crew bases which continue to expand in size as the carrier consolidates its footprint.

Partnership, codeshare and passenger assistance

British Airways continues to expand options for passengers through its partnerships. The carrier has a codeshare agreement with IndiGo and a joint business partnership with Qatar Airways, which together enables it to operate a total of 148 weekly one-way direct options via 13 Indian stations and London and Doha.

These partnerships extend BA’s reach beyond its direct network into regional Indian cities.

In March, BA launched its Meet & Assist service dedicated to passengers flying from India to the UK who require additional assistance during their journey.

The airline sees the rise of Indian carriers including IndiGo and Air India as a positive sign for the aviation industry and India’s emergence as a global aviation hub.

Demand drivers and policy implications

Half a million Indians visit the United Kingdom each year, where both leisure and education contribute significantly to traffic.

The large number of Indian expatriates in the UK increases the continuous demand on this route throughout the year.

The Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the UK also supports travel volume by strengthening commercial and cultural exchanges between the two countries.
