Organic bedding brand Coyuchi recently launched its own organic mattress, which blends cotton, wool, and Dunlop latex on top of individually wrapped coils. While Coyuchi’s linen sheets are excellent, I was a little nervous to try the company’s first mattress effort. After all, a bed isn’t a mattress, and expertise doesn’t always transfer across efforts. However, in this case, it happened. Coyuchi’s Organic Natural REM mattress is surprisingly firm without being too firm and is perfect for those of us who lack a sleep style and sleep in every position – side, back, stomach. I was never uncomfortable.

The design starts with coils wound on a wool pad and then, like a Midwestern dip, layers in smaller coils, latex and then wool, and tops it off with an organic cotton cover. It has surprisingly good edge support considering the distance between the coils and the top, and the mattress also offers good motion isolation. Coyuchi says Natural REM can be used with or without a box spring. I tested it on a box spring for a few months and then spent a week leaving it on the floor and didn’t notice any difference. At 11 inches deep, there is room for a topper, although I didn’t feel the need for one.

The cotton and wool layers are GOTS-certified organic, while Dunlop Latex offers GOLS certification. The material is colorless, which is great for anyone bothered by industrial dyes. Like most of these organic options, Coyuchi is made without chemicals, foam, or glue.
