According to the San Francisco Fire Department, an electrical fire broke out on the third rail around 11:30 a.m.
“Crews quickly and safely extinguished the fire with a dry chemical fire extinguisher,” firefighters said in a statement.
There is no report of anyone being injured.
BART said in a separate statement that preliminary reports have been received of a burst insulator on the trackway.
“A blown insulator made a loud noise and produced smoke and fumes. We evacuated the station and San Francisco Fire responded to extinguish the fire,” the agency said.
BART officials said there was some damage to the third rail that will require repair and that service is running on undamaged tracks. Civic Center station reopened shortly after 12:25 p.m.
The trains are single tracking between the 24th Street Mission and Montgomery Street stations, the agency said. Green Line and Red Line service is not running and passengers should expect major delays throughout the system.
