Coalition drama continues during meeting to discuss climate policy
The ongoing drama over the Coalition’s climate policy continues this afternoon, with Liberal and National MPs preparing to join a virtual party room meeting over the next hour. They will discuss a joint energy and emissions policy for the next election, days after the Liberals formally decided to drop support for net zero by 2050 policies.
Leader of the opposition, Susan Le, She is trying to satisfy the competing demands of the conservative and liberal factions in her party while trying to present a united front against Labour.
We are expecting a press conference from the opposition this afternoon, but we already know the broad outlines of the policy.
The Liberal shadow ministry agreed on Thursday that a future coalition government would remove the commitment to net zero by 2050, as well as Labor’s legislated 43% emissions reduction target by 2030 and its 82% renewables target. They plan to focus on energy prices for homes and businesses and promote coal and other fossil fuels for a future coalition government.
However the Liberal plan would not include withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and achieving net zero emissions would be considered a “welcome outcome”.
The decision – and Sunday’s meeting – is expected to calm tensions over Le’s leadership, but given the coalition’s poor standing in the polls, it poses a challenge for the leadership aspirants. angus taylor Or Andrew Hastie That’s still likely some time in 2026.

Last week, the Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung people in Victoria filed a native title claim for Melbourne and its surrounds. Prime Minister, Jacinta Allenannounced this as a “positive step”, and the 11 members who made the claim were quick to point out that it would have no impact on the rights of property owners in Melbourne.
But some right-wing commentators have compared it to “apartheid”, saying it would lead to “racial division”.
So what is the original title? And what does this mean for Melbourne?
Albanese claims US tariff cuts are ‘direct result’ of Australian advocacy
Anthony Albanese has welcomed the Trump administration’s decision to lift tariffs on beef and other agricultural exports to the US, and claimed that the reversal was a “direct result” of his government’s advocacy.
Speaking to reporters in Melbourne moments earlier, the Prime Minister said the move was “something we have been advocating” and that the actual reciprocal tariffs would be zero, as Australia does not have tariffs on US goods or services. He continued:
The decision on beef and some other agricultural products is welcome and is a direct result of the strong advocacy of Don Farrell As Trade Minister, my meetings with other Australian Ministers, and indeed with the President (Donald Trump Where we have had three meetings in the last month.

Penny Wong condemns Alliance for the Pacific’s ‘disrespect’
circling back Penny WongWho appeared on ABC’s Insiders This Morning.
The Foreign Minister has criticized the alliance for what he called an “insult” to the Pacific region.
“The Pacific’s view of the Coalition’s approach to climate policy is well documented and has become a symbol of the Coalition’s disrespect for the Pacific. This was the case Tony AbbottThis case was under Scott MorrisonAnd, sadly, this is the case susan le” Wong said.
He said the Pacific region considers climate change as its No. 1 issue.
So, when the parties that supposedly run the government in our country… make fun of water dripping at the door, or demonstrate that they are unwilling to take action – what Prashant takes from this is disrespect.
Now, we know that our prosperity and our security are linked to our region. This again shows that the Coalition will not only impose greater costs on Australians but will also impose costs on Australia in our region.
Albanese calls coalition squabbling ‘rabble and clown show’
Anthony Albanese The announcement of the Melbourne Metro launch was used as an opportunity to criticize the Coalition’s approach to climate change and the uncertainty created by its stance on net zero.
“We see that to invest you need certainty,” he told reporters in Melbourne recently.
“And, that’s why the coalition’s ongoing talks with each other about net zero elimination, which is now their policy, is an example of what happens when you don’t have certainty, when you don’t have a plan, when you just bicker,” he said.
If anyone thinks there is certainty in the coalition going forward, they are not paying any attention to the coalition’s posturing and clown show on energy policy and climate policy.
He said the coalition was trying to “pretend” it had a common position.
They’re just going back to where they were before – and Australians shouldn’t have to pay this alliance price of chaos Because this is what we are dealing with now.

Meta, Google and TikTok to be included in media bargaining measures

Tom McIlroy
The man charged with implementing a new measure to make social media platforms pay for news content taken from Australian publishers says Meta, Google and TikTok will fall within the rules.
Daniel MulinoAlbany, the assistant treasurer of government, is designing a news media bargaining incentive designed to penalize big tech companies that don’t pay for the media content from which they make money.
Large social media and search platforms with Australian-derived revenues of at least $250 million will be subject to the new rules, even if they contain news content, according to a discussion paper released last week.
“Our expectation is that Meta, Google and TikTok will be involved,” he told Sky this morning.
Mulino said he is consulting with media players, digital platforms and also informing the Trump administration about the plans. Trump had threatened to retaliate against what he sees as unfair treatment of US-based platforms.
First announced in December 2024, the start date of the new scheme has not yet been decided and will be subject to a one-month public consultation by the government.
“What we are hearing from stakeholders is that they are willing to engage constructively with the government,” he said.
Initially, all the digital platforms have indicated that they are really keen to engage and that is a very welcome thing from my point of view.

Hard rock band Amyl and the Sniffers have announced thousands of free drinks for fans after a show was called off due to safety concerns.
The Melbourne-based organization was due to hold a free, all-ages show at Federation Square last night, but the show was canceled minutes before lead singer Amy Taylor and her band mates were due to take the stage, with the Melbourne Arts Precinct Corporation, which operates Fed Square, reportedly saying there were multiple breaches of safety barriers. AAP,

He said that “a group of people” climbed over the barriers, making the event unsafe.
“Especially because it was all ages, we couldn’t do that,” she said.
The band opened $5,000 tabs at seven locations, telling fans to “have a drink for us”.
“We really wanted to play,” Taylor said. “I was throwing tantrums like there was no tomorrow. You can’t imagine it, and I’m so sorry. Just have some fun tonight.”
