NSW Police Commissioner to decide on extension of protest ban
Protesters will soon know whether they will be allowed to return to the streets of Sydney as police decide whether to lift the ban on rallies. AAP Report.
NSW Police Commissioner scum lanyon It is expected to decide on Tuesday whether to use its controversial powers to ban public gatherings for another fortnight.
While some rallies – including a march condemning US attacks on Venezuela – have taken place despite the ban, civil liberties groups and activists have warned that expanding it would prevent people from seeking official authorization to protest.
Laws introduced in the NSW Parliament after a deadly mass shooting at Bondi Beach have given the commissioner the ability to ban protests in major metropolitan areas following a declared terrorist incident.
Lanyon deployed his powers almost immediately after permission was granted, banning protests for two weeks from Christmas Eve.
The current declaration restricts public gatherings in Sydney’s south-west, north-west and central metropolitan areas and can be extended fortnightly for up to three months.

Labor MPs and activists join calls for royal commission into anti-Semitism and Bondi attacks
A group of former Labor MPs and activists have written an open letter to Anthony Albanese calling on him to set up a royal commission into antisemitism and the Bondi terror attack.
He said democracy was “in danger” if the Prime Minister failed to heed his appeals.
We applaud the NSW Premier Chris Minns To convene a NSW royal commission, but such a commission cannot compel institutions and individuals beyond its jurisdiction to give evidence or provide the legal protections required to speak candidly to Commonwealth officials.
Only a Commonwealth royal commission can uncover the dynamics of Jew hatred, including the threat of social media, how hate and incitement are weaponised in Australia and how we can come together across the country to defeat it.
