Ashes 2025-26: Five reasons for England to be positive before second Test in Brisbane

The general characteristics of the Brisbane pitch, namely pace and bounce, should suit the England fast bowlers’ range, as they did in the first innings in Perth, before things took a terrible turn.

Historically, the Gabba has a more bouncy pitch than Perth Stadium and is the most bouncy pitch anywhere in the world.

This is also the ground where ‘hard lengths’ (balls pitched between 8 meters and 10 meters from the batsman) are most effective at world level.

Helpers, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue, who could replace the injured Mark Wood, bowl in or close to this range on average.

When England got good or difficult lengths in the first Test, they averaged 12.5 and 19.8 respectively.

Previous pink ball Tests suggest that it will be difficult to bat under lights, but there have been times when the ball is less playable in daylight.

This may also help England’s struggling batsmen to regain form.
