Arsenal beat ‘best team in Europe’ so are they now Champions League contenders?

Arsenal forwards Victor Gyökeres, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus were all unavailable, but Arteta was able to call on Nonny Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli from the substitute bench.

Arsenal have suffered injuries to a number of their forwards, but Arteta’s options look to get even better with captain Martin Odegaard returning tonight and Gyöckeres and Havertz moving forward.

After bringing in eight players in the summer, Arteta has been able to deal with the problems he has faced – Madučí scored his first goal for the club against Bayern, while Martinelli scored his fourth goal in as many games in the Champions League.

Madueke said, “I couldn’t have picked a better game to score my first Arsenal goal. I’m very happy that the team got the win as well.”

“It’s an unbelievable statement, but we know how much work we’ve put in. We go into these games with full confidence that we’re going to win.

“I’m a confident player. I don’t like anyone telling me I can’t do something. But my teammates and the staff have confidence in me.”

And former defender Upson believes the options Arsenal have are a big reason why Arteta is able to keep standards so high.

“Arsenal’s bench performs well in all areas in terms of freshness and quality.” Upson said.

“We’re talking about a number of players coming in and making an impact. They’re all vying for a starting position.

“I think that’s the key. It’s not easy for a manager to keep such a deep team hungry, keep it together and fight for shirts, but also respond in the right way when he’s not in the team.

“Ultimately, all of Mikel Arteta’s players are moving in the same direction. The goal is the Premier League title and to go as far as possible in the Champions League.
