Apple’s Siri Isn’t Just Going to Use One Chatbot. It’s Going to Use All of Them

Siri has moved from a relationship with OpenAI to an open relationship. According to Bloomberg, Apple has decided to abandon an exclusive deal with OpenAI to allow Siri to run queries through ChatGPIT and will instead opt to open the platform to competing chatbots including Anthropic’s Cloud and Google’s Gemini.

According to the report, the update allowing access to other chatbots will be part of the release of iOS 27, which is expected to be announced at WWDC in June. Users will be able to choose which AI models they use in conjunction with Siri through an upcoming “Extensions” feature. You’ll reportedly have to download the app for their chatbot of choice and then set it as their selection in the Apple Intelligence & Siri section of Settings. This capability will reportedly be available on Apple platforms with support in iOS 27, iPad OS 27, and macOS 27 when the update arrives.

The deal will end ChatGPT’s Siri monopoly, which it has had since entering into an agreement with Apple in 2024. That deal reportedly saw zero dollars exchanged hands. Instead, it was a mutually beneficial agreement that enabled Apple to provide chatbot functionality without developing its own models and gave OpenAI access to many new users. Apple’s decision to open things up is apparently part of a play to increase subscriptions for chatbots through the App Store, where Apple gets commissions of up to 30%.

While the new arrangement will allow Siri to send queries to the cloud, ChatGPT, or Gemini, Google will still dig its claws deepest into Apple’s ecosystem. Last year, it was reported that Apple would pay Google $1 billion to serve as the brains of a smarter Siri. Reportedly, Gemini will still handle some specific tasks within Siri and Apple Intelligence, even if users choose a different chatbot to serve as its primary answer provider.

Apple had to do nothing but trouble in bringing out AI-enabled Siri. The company struggled to get its larger language model-driven Siri up and running, resulting in delays, internal strife, and a corporate shakeup. Now that it looks like Apple has come up with at least a short-term solution to giving Siri an AI boost, it also seems like the company is getting ready to incorporate the assistant into everything. There is always overcorrection.
